This deli in the Netherlands is the first building in the country to be designed by the "Cradle 2 Cradle" concept. Designed to get maximum light and uses all 'good' materials

The "Cradle to Cradle" design theory is one I would like to base my design on. Some key points of the theory
  • A "circulating" life cycle of the product and design
  • The design industry must PROTECT and ENRICH the earths eco systems
  • A "holistic" economic, social and industrial framework to make things EFFICIENT and WASTE-FREE
  • Fair trade to the people
Every material used comes under the titles "Technical Nutrients" and "Biological Nutrients"
Technical Nutrients:
  • Non toxic synthetic materials
  • NO negative effect on the environment
  • Used in CONTINUOUS CYCLES... WITHOUT losing quality
  • Material can be used AGAIN AND AGAIN without creating any waste
Biological Nutrients:
  • Organic materials
  • BIODEGRADABLE: once used can be COMPOSTED and returned to the soil
  • This compost provides essential nutrients to the small ecosystems in the soil and therefore the rest of the earths ecosystems
  • MUST BE LOCAL MATERIAL as not introduce nutrients that will be TOXIC TO THE ENVIRONMENT
Knowledge of the materials used must be researched and decided whether they are appropriate to use in terms of social and environmental concerns:
  • WHERE they came from
  • HOW they were harvested
  • If they can be RE-USED or RECYCLED or COMPOSTED
LOW ENERGY PRODUCTION
  • At least 50% renewable energy used in production of materials
WATER SAFETY
  • Biologically cleaned
  • CLEAN TO BE RELEASED BACK TO THE ENVIRONMENT SAFELY
